Manchester eScholar is a product of The University of Manchester's Institutional Repository Project.

In response to a range of national and international developments, and in support of the University of Manchester’s 2015 agenda, the University’s Research Group (currently chaired by Professor Simon Gaskell) requested John Rylands University Library initiate a project with the aim to establish institutional repository services for the University of Manchester.

The University’s Institutional Repository (IR) Project was commissioned on 1st October 2007 and runs for two years. Manchester eScholar was officially launched on 23rd April 2009.
