Investing in the AIM market

Introduction

In this resource we will be looking at some of the databases and platforms which you could use to conduct research for your up-coming project (focused around investing in the Alternative Investment or AIM market). We have a wide variety of databases available which you can use to find company financial data and facts and figures. You can also research the AIM100 index and industrial sectors in general, in order to help you identify the necessary trends and performance related data, you will need to make the necessary recommendations for your report. We will also show you how you can access information relating to company and financial information using the Bloomberg and LSEG Workspace databases. We will then look at how you can conduct relevant sector based research using business and management literature, market research, and economic and demographic data.

Getting started

All of our databases which will help you with your research into the AIM100 market are housed in one handy place on the Library website.

If you haven’t already used it, you should bookmark our Business and Management subject guide which contains links to all the databases we will discuss in this resource (plus many others which may be useful for other course units). The guide contains two tabs “Databases” and “Journals”.

  • The Databases tab will link you to useful products such as company information databases, market research and economic and demographic information. These can be really useful if you are looking for primary data sources or statistics. You can find a comprehensive overview of these sources within the Specialist Library Support section of our website.

  • The Journals tab contains links to databases which have collections of academic and trade journal articles. You can use this tab to search for relevant literature and research on topics such as ethical investment.

Company and financial information

Your project requires you to conduct a detailed business, accounting and financial analysis of two AIM listed companies. We have a number of databases that you can use to help you with this. For this resource we will focus on the Bloomberg and LSEG Workspace platforms, though we have other databases (such as Fame) which you can also use to find relevant information. Bloomberg terminals are iconic within the world of financial markets and traders, and you’ll see plenty representations of the famous black and orange multi-screen terminals in the media. They can commonly be viewed in the back ground of news reports which feature financial markets, and in TV programmes that focus on the cut and thrust of corporate politics such as HBO’s Billions or Succession. You will also find them within the Finance Zone of the Eddie Davies Library, including a multi-screen version of the terminal. As academic customers our terminals are subject to a 15 minute delay meaning you won’t be able to out-flank the likes of George Soros on multi-million dollar trades. You do have access however to a 24-hour, global financial services system that provides reliable financial, economic and government information covering all market sectors. It features company financials, market data spanning more than 20 years, charts, statistics, a communications platform and current news reports. We will also look at the information provided by a rival product to Bloomberg, LSEG Workspace. This also provides a comprehensive package of financial data and analysis, including easy access to ESG data which may prove particularly useful for this project.

Accessing LSEG Workspace reports

Reports

LSEG Workspace provides a wide range of both industry and individual company reports which contain a very useful collation of data and analysis from the last financial year. The image shows a snippet from a recent report on ASOS. The reports contain a huge variety of useful data including the latest information on pricing, earnings and valuations. You also find useful analysis such as summaries, peer analysis and projections.

Financial statements

The database also contains a number of individual functions and apps which allow you to search for financial summaries, statements, and share price data. You can also search for specific areas of performance such as Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) data. The image below shows an ESG snapshot for ASOS. You can simply search for a specific AIM company, and then click on the ESG tab to see similar details for your chosen company.

Sector based research

Bloomberg and LSEG Workspace (as well as other databases such as Fame) are great for finding facts, figures and data. As we have seen you can also access some analysis through the news and reports features. However your assignment also requires you to look at key trends in your chosen sector, and provide some analysis around the potential impact of any political or economic uncertainties which are faced by the your chosen sector. You have also been asked to think about factors which will appeal to an ethical investor. For these elements we have many other sources of information, which will help you to write a detailed and well informed analysis. The Library provides access to market research publications, economic and demographic information and articles from trade news publications. These will all help you to pick out important trends within your chosen sector and identify key issues in the industrial landscape. These sources are chiefly aimed at those working in specific sectors, so you will usually find some extended discussion of the potential opportunities and threats being faced in your chosen sector. We also have extensive holdings of practitioner and academic research publications which you can use to get up to speed with the latest thinking around ethical investment decision making processes. In the next section we will look at some of the databases you can use to help you with this.

Market research

The following databases will be your best source of information for this project.

This screenshot shows an example of the type of information to find within these databases. It is taken from Mintel and shows a section of a report which examines the impact of sustainability activity on the fashion industry.

All of the interfaces above offer a Google-style searching interface, however the way in which you access and download the information might be unfamiliar. Our Specialist Library Support service has produced a guide to accessing and using our market research databases. The guide contains example searches from all the databases listed above if you require further help.

Trade and industry news

Trade and industry news (or Business journalism or business news) is common in the mainstream media. Typically the stories produced will report on recent events, and offer analysis from a business, economic or financial view point. Some stories will focus on a specific company, while others might focus more on a particular sector or industry. This can be a very valuable research tool if you are looking to find out more about a particular company, sector or industry.

The main advantage from a research point of view is the currency that these sources provide. They will allow you to monitor events as they happen, gaining insight into company and industry related events. The analysis provided will often focus on the key political, economic and market trends, and this can help your research to remain relevant and vibrant. However, the fast paced nature of production means that caution should always be exercised when using these sources.

The following are the best options for locating trade and industry news.

  • Factiva
  • Business Source Premier

We will explore the Business Source Premier searching interface in the next section. Factiva can be quite an unforgiving tool to use initially. The "Search builder" interface requires a bit of practice. You will find a detailed introduction to the platform within the Specialist Library Support section of the Library website (you will need to scroll down the page to find the section on Factiva).

Business and management literature

There is a huge amount of literature available in the field of Business and Management encompassing academic, trade and popular publications. Given the large number of articles available it is very important that you employ a clear and consistent search strategy which gives due consideration to the use of appropriate keywords, phrases and alternative concepts — there is further guidance available on this from our Specialist Library Support pages.

You can of course use our Library search platform or Google Scholar to search for relevant articles. However, using a database does allow you to create more detailed searches which can be useful in a project such as this assignment where your focus is quite specific.

The example below (taken from Business Source Premier) shows a possible search strategy you could usefully employ using most of these databases. The search boxes allow you to input multiple concepts connected to a similar theme (e.g. “services or service industry”) which you can combine with other concepts (e.g. “ethics or ethical…” to create a search that is both comprehensive and on target.
