    Abstract

    With the drive to move towards renewable resources, and with the fundamental scientific desire to better understand the materials that nature has provided us with, in terms of their mechanics and hierarchical structure, the study of cellulosebased nanocomposite materials has increased dramatically in the last 10 years. This chapter introduces the concepts of using Raman spectroscopy for the study of cellulose nanocomposites. The principles behind Raman spectroscopy are described, with particular emphasis on the information it can yield. The shift in Raman bands towards a lower wavenumber upon the application of external deformation is described as a means of not only following molecular deformation, as has been reported for a wide variety of other materials, but also as a tool for monitoring the dispersion of the nanostructured phase and therefore the level of stress-transfer.
