Abstract
The aim of this paper is, to address by way of debate, the relative impact of the literature in the industrial marketing and purchasing (IMP) field. Prominent IMP literature, including texts and articles, are taken as the sampling frame. The resultant citing of these articles is examined in respect to the journal in which the citing article is published. The Social Science Citation Index® 1981-1997 is used to explore the impact of the concepts advocated by IMP authors and assesses whether the literature has achieved scholarly recognition. The issues being addressed for debate include whether IMP concepts are being seen by publishing academics as being of value to understanding the business environment, and whether these concepts, by way of a research front, are being disseminated in the main journals on a geographical and disciplinary basis. The IMP academic, whose literature evidences a research front, needs some kind of current alerting service, such as a citation index, to facilitate a conceptual map.
