Abstract

This paper seeks to establish the major constraints and barriers to developing stronger business to business relations between purchasers and suppliers. The advantages and disadvantages for buyers and suppliers of trends such as longer-term contracts, consensual decision making, and supply base rationalisation have both costs and benefits for each party. These costs and benefits create major constraints and barriers to the development of a strategic role for purchasing. Recent empirical research on corporate purchasing in Ireland is presented and the findings and implications for management are discussed.
