DATASET ------------ Title: Supplementary data for PhD thesis "In Their Own Image? Church-Building in the Deanery of Manchester 1847-1903: Relationships between Donor, Architect and Churchmanship" Creator: Boyd, Meriel Cornelia Publication year: 2016 Publisher: The University of Manchester Accessible from: http://dx.doi.org/10.15127/1.302387 3. TERMS OF USE ----------------- This dataset is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ 4. CONTENTS ------------ The following conventions are used. 4.1. ORGANISATION AND CODING The dataset amplifies material presented in the thesis concerning: - donors (cf. Thesis Chapter One) - their churches (cf. Thesis Chapter Two) - their architects (cf. Thesis Chapter Three) - churchmanship pertaining to donors, churches and architects (cf. Thesis Chapter Four). 4.1.1. THESIS DONOR-ORGANISATION AND -CODING, USED AS FRAMEWORK FOR DATASET Fifty donors are organised into three donor-categories, and each donor is assigned a unique code accordingly: - Members of Parliament (MPs): donor-category A has six donors, coded A1, A2 ... A6 - Industrialists: donor-category B has thirty-one donors, coded B1, B2 ... B31 - Non-Industrialists: donor-category C has thirteen donors, coded C1, C2 ... C13 (cf. Thesis Appendix 1.1, p. 289-290, for further details of donor-categories and donors). 4.1.2. DATASET ORGANISATION AND CODING At level 1, a single folder, the Boyd_Meriel_Dataset folder, provided as a compressed (.zip) folder, contains the entire dataset. Within the level-1 Boyd_Meriel_Dataset folder, the dataset's folders and files (using as framework the thesis' donor-organisation and -coding, as noted above) are organised as follows: At level 2 are three Donor-Category folders, each provided as a compressed (.zip) folder: - Donor_Category_A - Donor_Category_B - Donor_Category_C Each level-2 Donor-Category folder: - corresponds to a thesis donor-category - is coded to correspond with the equivalent code from the thesis text. At level 3 are fifty Donor-Data folders, distributed according to category of donor between the three level-2 Donor-Category folders. The level-3 Donor-Data folders are distributed and prefix-coded as follows (note: when numbers are included in a Donor-Folder name, to help ensure that a file directory displays sub-folder names in alphanumeric order, they are always given as a two-digit code, e.g. "A1" is expressed as "A01". Hence level-3 Donor-Data folder is provided in the form A01_Francis_Egerton, rather than A1_Francis_Egerton): - Level-2 Donor_Category_A contains six level-3 MP Donor-Data folders, each provided as a compressed (.zip) folder: A01, A02 ... A06 example: A01_Francis_Egerton - Level-2 Donor_Category_B contains thirty-one level-3 Industrialist Donor-Data folders, each provided as a compressed (.zip) folder: B01, B02 ... B09, B10 ... B31 example: B01_Whitehead - Level-2 Donor_Category_C contains thirteen level-3 Non-Industrialist Donor-Data folders, each provided as a compressed (.zip) folder: C01, C02 ... C09, C10 ... C13 example: C01_Brooks At level 4 is, within each of the fifty level-3 Donor-Data folders, a Word (.doc) Donor-Text-Data file, provided as a compressed (.zip) file, of text-data pertaining to that donor and his/her/their church(es), organised into three types: - biographical - church data - extra material with, additionally, in cases where a church is an architect's sole or first study-church, a fourth type: - architect(s), working notes. Also at level 4 is, within each of forty-six of the fifty level-3 Donor-Data folders, a Donor-Image-Data folder, provided as a compressed (.zip) folder, containing JPEG (.jpg) images pertaining to the church(es) funded by that donor. Since the dataset holds no images for any of the remaining four level-3 Donor-Data folders (A02, A05, B24, C10), each of these contains only the level-4 compressed (.zip) file opening to the already-mentioned Word (.doc) file of textual data. Each level-4 Donor-Text-Data file and each level-4 Donor-Image-Data folder is prefix-coded identically to its parent level-3 Donor-Data folder. Examples: a) of an MP-donor Level-3 Donor-Data folder and contents: Donor-Data folder A06_Houldsworth, provided as compressed (.zip) folder A06_Houldsworth.zip contains (i) Level-4 Donor-Data-Text Word (.doc) file A06_Houldsworth_Reddish_St_Elisabeth.doc, provided as compressed (zip) file A06_Houldsworth_Reddish_St_Elisabeth.zip, presenting textual detail: - biographical (William Henry Houldsworth) - church data (St. Elisabeth, Reddish) - extra material (Houldsworth; Reddish) - architect, working notes (Alfred Waterhouse) (ii) Level-4 Donor-Data-Image folder A06_Reddish_St_Elisabeth_images, provided as compressed (zip) folder A06_Reddish_St_Elisabeth_images.zip, containing JPEG (.jpg) images of the church St. Elisabeth, Reddish b) of an Industrialist-donor Level-3 Donor-Data folder and contents: Donor-Data folder B08_Mellodew, provided as compressed (.zip) folder B08_Mellodew.zip contains (i) Level-4 Donor-Data-Text Word (.doc) file B08_Mellodew_Moorside_St_Thomas.doc, provided as compressed (.zip) file B08_Mellodew_Moorside_St_Thomas.zip, presenting textual detail: - biographical (Thomas Mellodew) - church data (St. Thomas, Moorside) - extra material (Mellodew; Moorside) - architect, working notes (H. Cockbain) (ii) Level-4 Donor-Data-Image folder B08_Moorside_St_Thomas_images, provided as compressed (.zip) folder B08_Moorside_St_Thomas_images.zip, containing JPEG (.jpg) images of the church St. Thomas, Moorside c) of a Non-Industrialist-donor Level-3 Donor-Data folder and contents: Donor-Data folder C01_Brooks, provided as compressed (.zip) folder C01_Brooks.zip contains (i) Level-4 Donor-Data-Text Word (.doc) file C01_Brooks_Whalley_Range_St_Margaret.doc, provided as compressed (.zip) file C01_Brooks_Whalley_Range_St_Margaret.zip, presenting textual detail: - biographical (Samuel Brooks) - church data (St. Margaret, Whalley Range) - extra material (Brooks; Whalley Range) - architect, working notes (James Harrison) (ii) Level-4 Donor-Data-Image folder C01_Whalley_Range_St_Margaret_images, provided as compressed (.zip) folder C01_Whalley_Range_St_Margaret_images.zip, containing JPEG (.jpg) images of the church St. Margaret, Whalley Range d) of a multiple-church donor Level-3 Donor-Data folder and contents: Donor-Data folder B01_Whitehead, provided as compressed (.zip) folder B01_Whitehead.zip contains: (i) Level-4 Donor-Data-Text Word (.doc) file B01_Whitehead_1_Friezland_Christ_Church_2_Roughtown_St_John.doc, provided as compressed (.zip) file B01_Whitehead_1_Friezland_Christ_Church_2_Roughtown_St_John.zip, presenting textual detail: - biographical (Whitehead) - church data (1, Christ Church, Friezland; 2, St. John the Baptist, Roughtown) - extra material (Whitehead; 1, Friezland; 2, Roughtown) - architects, working notes (1, George Shaw; 2, Wild & Collins) (ii) Level-4 Donor-Data-Image folder B01_1_Friezland_Christ_Church_2_Roughtown_St_John_images, provided as compressed (.zip) folder B01_1_Friezland_Christ_Church_2_Roughtown_St_John_images.zip, containing JPEG (.jpg) images of the two churches: [1] Christ Church, Friezland; and [2] St. John the Baptist, Roughtown. e) of a demolished-church-without-images donor Level-3 Donor-Data folder and contents: Donor-Data folder B24_Stewart, provided as compressed-folder B24_Steward.zip, contains simply: Level-4 Donor-Data-Text Word (.doc) file B24_Stewart_Collyhurst_St_James.doc, provided as compressed-file B24_Stewart_Collyhurst_St_James.zip, presenting textual detail: - biographical (Charles Patrick Stewart) - church data (St. James, Collyhurst) - extra material (Stewart; Collyhurst) - architect, working notes (John Lowe) 4.2 FOLDER- AND FILE-NAMING 4.2.1. FILE-NAME COMPONENTS (in order): - donor-code (A01, A02, A03, ...) - donor-name (Blair, Houldsworth, Whitehead, ...) - church-location (Miles Platting, Kearsley Moor, Reddish, ...) - church-dedication (St. Paul, St. Mark, St. Stephen, ...) NOTE: an underscore "_" is used: a) To separate file-name components b) Where church-locations contain more than one word, to separate these, e.g. "Kearsley Moor" is expressed as "Kearsley_Moor" c) Where church-dedications contain abbreviations e.g. "St. Stephen" is expressed as "St_Stephen" e.g. A03_Blair_Kearsley_Moor_St_Stephen.zip 4.2.2. FILE-NAME ANOMALIES: - in the case of identically-surnamed but discrete donors, given-names or -initials are additionally included. Thus, A01_Francis_Egerton_1_Walkden_St_Paul_2_Worsley_St_Mark.zip A04_W_Egerton_1_Hulme_St_Mary_2_3_4_Ordsall_Sts_Clement_Cyprian_Ignatius.zip A02_Benjamin_Heywood_Miles_Platting_St_John.zip C04_ES_Heywood_Pendlebury_St_Augustine.zip A05_Birley_Hulme_1_St_Philip_2_St_Michael_3_St_Stephen.zip B04_Herbert_Birley_Brindle_Heath_St_Anne.zip B26_Charlotte_Anne_Fletcher_Clifton_St_Ann.zip B27_Old_Ralph_Fletcher_Howe_Bridge_St_Michael.zip - in the case of donors having funded more than one church-project, the place-name and church-dedication of each, in chronological order, is included. Thus, two church-projects: A01_Francis_Egerton_1_Walkden_St_Paul_2_Worsley_St_Mark.zip B01_Whitehead_1_Friezland_Christ_Church_2_Roughtown_St_John.zip B02_Gardner_1_Moss_Side_Christ_Church_2_Chorlton_u_Medlock_St_Luke.zip B03_Whittaker_1_Hurst_St_John_2_Hurst_Brook_St_James.zip B18_Greenhalgh_1_Bolton_All_Souls_2_Bolton_St_Saviour.zip B23_Beyer_1_Gorton_St_James_2_Gorton_All_Saints.zip three church-projects: A05_Birley_Hulme_1_St_Philip_2_St_Michael_3_St_Stephen.zip four church-projects: A04_W_Egerton_1_Hulme_St_Mary_2_3_4_Ordsall_Sts_Clement_Cyprian_Ignatius.zip 5.
