My Electronic Thesis/Dissertation Service

Postgraduate graduation colours
Electronic thesis submission is University required - postgraduate research students deposit an electronic version of their thesis into Manchester eScholar using the MyETD Service.

The Manchester eScholar My electronic thesis/dissertation (ETD) service is a web based application which enables doctoral-level postgraduate research (PGR) students to submit an electronic copy of their thesis and postgraduate administrative staff to manage this process. The service includes extensive online help and guidance for students on matters such as: what is an ETD? should I make my thesis available to others? how do I create a PDF? who owns the copyright of my thesis?

The University of Manchester requires all registered PGR students to submit an ETD. A Manchester University ETD consists of three elements,

  1. metadata describing the thesis e.g. title, author name, abstract, keywords
  2. a declaration on the students requirements on making the thesis (electronic and print) available to others
  3. a PDF version of the full-text of their thesis

Students deposit an ETD for both their examination (and re-submission as necessary) and final versions of their thesis. All submissions are subject to the folowing,

The My ETD Service includes tools that allow Faculty/School postgraduate administrative staff to manage and oversee student submissions. As a result, the submission processes are devolved and integrated with local practices across the University. For example, the management tools allow approved individuals to create submission windows tailored to individual student needs, acknowledge submissions and review the state of any particular student submission. Only approved PGR administrators who have attended appropriate training have access to the My ETD management tools.

ALL electronic theses remain hidden unless,

  1. the thesis is the final version - post-examination, including required corrections,
  2. the PGR student declares (as part of their ETD submission) that they agree the thesis may be downloaded,
  3. the appropriate Faculty/School administrator has acknowledged receipt of the ETD submission,
  4. the appropriate Faculty/School administrator has approved the thesis can be made available to others.

Students can access the My ETD Service via My Manchester and using the Electronic thesis/dissertation portlet. Individuals are required to logon using the University's Central Authentication System (CAS).

The My ETD Service is available 24/7. Occasionally we have to schedule brief outages of this service. This enables us to add features and upgrade software. We give 24 hours notice prior to scheduled outages by posting messages on the Manchester eScholar Services website and other key access points e.g. the ETD portlet.

Individuals can request support by email, telephone and/or through fac-to-face meetings. Our telephone support line is available and we can meet face-to-face during core office hours (Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm, excluding national holidays).
